Sometimes fights aren’t always a bad thing. Sometimes fights, though they break us apart for now, we’ll never know when it will bring us closer together. In life, everything happens for a reason, and a fight has its reasons too. Maybe we should wait some time, and then finally look back to see whether that fight has changed us in some way, or it has made us grow up.

:: The Preface ::
Her heart was racing, racing so fast it felt like it was going to burst out of her chest. Her cheeks were burning, her throat dry and her eardrums ringing. She paced around her house in a storm, frustrated, arguing with him. None of them would back down, because they both had such a strong reason to press forward. Her voice was always louder than his, but his voice was like thunder to her ears. She raised her arm, pointing at him as the words came rolling out. He glared back at her in a rage, furious that she wouldn’t listen to his reason.
“Why did you stop me from taking him back?” he yelled.
“If you took him back, the only place he’ll be going is jail! He has a family to care for and despite his bad method, he was doing all he could to raise his kids!” She replied quickly.
“If you let me take him back I could plead with the Chief to find alternatives for him and help his family at the same time!”
“That’s never going to happen, Ron!” She snapped back at him.
“We’re the police, it will happen, Nancy!” He quickly countered with a stronger voice.
“And there you have it! We’re the police. We’ll never let him get away with it by simply doing community service. And even if we did, if we took him in do you think the triads will let him off easy?! They’re not humans! They’ll torture his family!” Her voice was cracking as it grew louder and louder, but she wasn’t going to back away from her reason.
These types of nights have been going on for as long as they can remember. They were always full of arguments, and in every single situation, their point of views are always the polar opposite of the other. Nancy couldn’t remember a night where she didn’t have to scream at him, and Ron couldn’t remember a night where they both could just sit down quietly and watch TV, like any other couple would.
“It was still against our job to simply let him go like that!”
“Rather than stopping him and punishing him and his family, why not just let it slip?!”
“Because law and order is what puts this world in order!” Ron argued with his loudest, most thunderous voice as he glared back at her. His body tense, chin high and looking at Nancy. She wasn’t backing down like he had hoped, instead she pushed closer to him.
“Well beside law and order, there is another thing called human nature, emotions and sympathy,” She snapped.
“If you keep on believing in that idea, you’ll only get yourself in more trouble.”
“Then let me handle my own problems!”
Those were her last words before she sharply turned from him and stormed into their room. She slammed the door shut, and it was the softer sound of locks clicking together that gave him the signal. She will ignore him until she’s calmed down. It wasn’t anything new to him though. After years of being with Nancy, Ron had come to figure out this nightly thing of theirs. It was complicated, but it was inevitable. Yet sometimes he’d wonder why these argumentative nights never broke them up, and why they’re still together, but never could he find the answer.
“I need a blanket!” he called loudly.
The door to their room suddenly swung open. Nancy moved too fast for him to see her, but a heavy fleece blanket flew quickly at him. Ron’s eyes widened when he caught it, slightly surprised by its attack on him.
“Thank you!”
He held the folded blanket in his hands, pacing back and forth from their kitchen to their living room and to their work area. Ron had basically covered the whole apartment in pacing, excluding the bathroom. The only room he hadn’t paced in was into their room. As he walked, he kept glancing at the clock. It read one in the morning, exactly.
After about an hour, he was starting to grow impatient. Just then, the soft sound of the lock gears clicking against each other hit his ears. He turned to their bedroom door and opened it. The door was finally unlocked. He grinned, but then forced his smile back into a straight expression. He then shook his head and let out a soft chuckle.
“We are such an odd couple,” he sighed. He knew that whenever they fight, Nancy would open the door for him after she cooled down, or if she’s mad enough he’d end up on the couch. Either way, waiting was a good option. Now, the door was open.
Ron walked inside and tossed his blanket onto the bed. Nancy was lying on her side, her head facing away from him. She bent her legs up, bear from a blanket. Ron knew she was still mad at him by the silence she gave him, but at least she had calmed down. They both did, thank god. He slid onto the bed, trying not to shake it too much to disturb her and maybe cause another unwanted argument.
He lied there in silence for a moment, until a thought came to his mind. He placed his arm behind his head, tilting his head upward slightly on his pillow. “Who’s making coffee tomorrow?” he asked.
“You are,” Nancy replied lazily. She was about to sleep until Ron asked her.
He smiled and turned back to his pillow, his back to her. Though they were facing away from each other, Ron scooted gently to be closer to her. He then closed his eyes and smiled.
